Animal Welfare Agenda 2017 - 2020

Animal welfare, inclusive of harm reduction and the relief of suffering, is central to the practice of veterinary medicine. The College of Veterinarians of Ontario has publicly acknowledged its opportunity to meaningfully contribute to positive outcomes that support animal health and wellbeing in its 2015 Position Statement on Animal Welfare. As part of its Strategy 2020 platform the College Council has set an ambitious three-year agenda, focused on specific welfare areas that offer opportunities for partnership and for impact.

Year One

To research and consider a policy statement on the humane handling of animals by veterinarians.

Year Two

To review and update the College’s existing Position Statement on Pain Management in animals by veterinarians.

Year Three

To research and develop education materials for the public on alternative medicine and potential risks to animals.

To host a provincial forum on the varied role of veterinarians in animal welfare.

Ongoing

To collaborate with the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs on government policy initiatives related to animal welfare in Ontario.

To participate in provincial and national discussions on shelter medicine and on euthanasia.

This agenda is reviewed regularly by College Council, and reported on annually in the College’s Annual Report.
