Antimicrobial Stewardship - Responsible Use in Your Practice

The College is supportive of efforts by the profession to preserve the efficacy of antimicrobials. Since discovery in the 20th century, antimicrobials have made a larger contribution to life expectancy than any other medication. Antimicrobials have transformed human and veterinary medicine. No question, antimicrobials save lives.

We, as individuals, all have a role to play in the battle against antimicrobial resistance. Veterinarians are on the frontline of that battle.

What does responsible use of antimicrobials look like? Quite simply, it’s:

  • Only by prescription
  • Only when necessary, and
  • Only at a dosage needed based on evidence

Stay current and informed on good practices for antimicrobial use and support your clients’ awareness as well
