Since discovery in the 20th century, antimicrobials have made a larger contribution to life expectancy than any other medication. Antimicrobials have transformed human and veterinary medicine. No question, antimicrobials save lives.
We, as individuals, all have a role to play in the battle against antimicrobial resistance. Veterinarians are on the frontline of that battle.
What does responsible use of antimicrobials look like? Quite simply, it’s:
- Only by prescription
- Only when necessary, and
- Only at a dosage needed based on evidence
