Veterinary Advisory: SARS-CoV-2 Detected in a Dog in Ontario

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) has been notified of
a confirmed case of SARS-CoV-2 in a dog in the Niagara region. SARS-CoV-2 is the virus
that causes COVID-19 in humans. The animal was tested as part of a research study,
following diagnosis of COVID-19 in several people in the same household. This dog did not
have any clinical signs of disease.

Veterinary Advisory - Confirmed Cluster of Canine Influenza in Southern Ontario

A cluster of dogs infected with influenza A virus of the H3N2 subtype, commonly known as H3N2 canine influenza virus (H3N2 CIV), has recently been identified in the Simcoe-Muskoka area. From January to March 2018, 4 clusters of H3N2 CIV were identified in Essex County (2), Simcoe-Muskoka area (1) and Northumberland County (1), all of which appeared to have been successfully controlled. Canine influenza virus was not reported in dogs in Canada prior to 2018.

Veterinary Update - Rabies in Ontario

Veterinarians should always be the first point of contact for animal owners with concerns about their animals’ health, including potential rabies exposures. Animal owners who call OMAFRA directly concerning potential rabies exposures will be advised to contact a local veterinarian. Veterinarians are welcome to contact OMAFRA for assistance with risk assessments, sample submission or post-exposure management, as needed.
