On October 6, 2020, the College will hold elections in the following Electoral Districts.
- Electoral District #5 - includes licensed members residing in the counties of Bruce, Grey, Dufferin, Huron, or Simcoe
- Electoral District #9 – includes licensed members employed by the Government of Canada or an agency of the Government of Canada
- Electoral District #10 – includes licensed members residing in Toronto or York
Licensed members who live or work in the electoral district, and specified that electoral district for their voting preference, are eligible to seek election, to nominate a candidate and also to vote in the election.

To be a candidate, a licensed member must be nominated by two licensed members who are eligible to vote in the election. The nomination process is conducted online through a secure portal.
Nominations are open from July 8 to August 21, 2020.
Nominee Support – Understanding the College Commitment
The College is committed to helping candidates understand clearly what is involved with serving on Council. “Understanding the College Commitment” is a mandatory one-hour, web-based workshop for all those who are confirmed as candidates in the Council by-election.
Discussion during the session will cover:
- The role of a councillor
- The concept of public interest
- The work of College Council
- Councillor Code of Conduct
- Time Commitment and Compensation
- Return on Investment
- Supports and Resources
Participation in “Understanding the College Commitment” will assist you with understanding your opportunity for contribution. Attendance at the workshop will be required during the nomination period.
When does Council meet?
There are generally four Council meetings a year, held in Guelph. Meetings are usually held in March, June, September and December. These meetings are open to the public and the agenda materials are posted electronically on a portal that is used by Council and Committee members.
If I am elected, when do I take office?
Your first Council meeting following the election is December 2020. You will officially join Council after its annual meeting in December.
How long is my commitment?
Following a general election, the term of office is three years.
Am I compensated for time away from my practice?
Council and committee members are reimbursed for expenses, such as travel, accommodation and meals, that are incurred while carrying out College business. There is also a per diem of $400 for each whole meeting day and $200 for a half day. Preparation time may also be claimed at $400 for Council and $200 for Committee.
What's on the agenda?
Council provides an opportunity to engage with your colleagues and public interest representatives in discussions and decision-making concerning the implementation of the Veterinarians Act in the province.
Agendas are always full and varied but a few of the priorities in the coming year include:
- continuing work to modernize the legislative oversight of the profession
- embarking on the priorities identified in Strategy 2023
- piloting the new model for the accreditation of facilities
- forging new relationships and improving communications with the profession and the public
- providing leadership to veterinary initiatives which promote public and animal health and welfare
I’m interested. How do I go about running for election?
It is quite straightforward. You will receive a link to a nomination form early in July. Complete the online nomination form, including two seconders, on or before the deadline of August 21 at 4 p.m. (EST).
Does the College assist with my election campaign?
Once the nominations close, you can receive two sets of mailing labels for all the veterinarians who are eligible to vote in your electoral district.
The College does not provide candidates with e-mail addresses for veterinarians.
When the election ballots are circulated to eligible voters, the College includes brief biographical information on all nominees.
