At its December meeting, Council approved in principle a proposed by-law amendment removing the requirement to pay the full application fee for a re-application within one year of the resignation or expiry date of a licence issued by the College.
The Licensure team receives inquiries from licensees throughout the year, especially at licence renewal time, who are not working and usually have financial strain (such as maternity leave, suffering from a physical or mental condition, dealing with a personal or family matter) asking if the College has an “inactive” status available.
As explored previously by the Registration Committee and Council, the College does not have the authority to create an “inactive” status. Veterinarians in Ontario either hold a licence and can practise veterinary medicine or they do not hold a licence. Currently veterinarians who resign their licence and return within the same year are required to submit a new application and pay the application fee of $100 + HST upon return to practice.
Under the by-laws, the Registrar has the authority to waive any of the College’s fees in exceptional circumstances and must document these reasons. To date, this fee has not been waived fees for this purpose. The Registrar requested a review of the by-law by the Registration Committee. The proposed change to Schedule 2 was supported in Council’s review.
