The College protects your right to safe, competent and ethical veterinary care. When you require the services of a veterinarian, you can expect to receive safe, quality care from a highly-trained licensed professional.

Reports from Community Reference Panels

In 2018, College Council established two panels to assist Council by providing input and perspective from the general public and the veterinary profession. After the first three-year-term, the panels were re-established as community reference panels.

Public Community Reference Panel:

The Public Commuinty Reference Panel meets three times a year and offers input to Council on policy matters, College communications and trends in animals, animal care from the public perspective.

The panel includes representation from the following sectors: companion animal, equine, food-producing animal, pharmaceutical industry, public health and food processing.

The members of the Public Community Reference Panel serve a three-year term.

Speaking Frankly: September 2021

A report on the first meeting of the newly established Public Community Reference Panel was held in September 2021. Topics discussed included telemedicine, caveat emptor/buyer beware, and trends or issues for consideration.

Speaking Frankly: October 2019

A report of the panel's meeting with Council from October 2019. Discussion focused on trends for consideration for the Future of Veterinary Medicine symposium, suggestions related to medically unnecessary veterinary surgery, and suggestions for Council to consider related to its regulatory role.

A report of the panel's meeting in May 2019. Dicussion focused on complementary and alternative medicine, travelling Council meetings, and what would the public like to understand about veterinary fees.

Speaking Frankly: September 2018

A report on the first meeting of the Public Advisory Panel with College Council was held in September 2018. Discussion included opportunities for the College to form broader connections with the public, areas where the panel can support Council’s work, and suggestions for communication outreach.

Veterinary Practice Community Reference Panel:

The Veterinary Practice Community Reference Panel meets at least three times a year and provides advice and feedback to Council on policy matters, engagement with the veterinary community, and trends in practice.

The panel includes representation from the following areas of veterinary practice: companion animal, shelter medicine, regulatory medicine, equine, bovine, swine, small ruminant, poultry, wildlife/zoo, exotic/bee/aquatic, and an OVC student.

The members of the Veterinary Practice Community Reference Panel serve a three-year term.

November 2019

The Veterinary Practice Advisory Panel met in November 2019. The discussion focused on standard of care, own use accounts, facility directors and non-drug veterinary products.

July 2019

The Veterinary Practice Advisory Panel met in July 2019 and discussed current methods of dispensing drugs including shipping directly to clients from an accredited veterinary facility, Counci transparency, the visibility of College resources, and engaging veterinarians in consultations. 

March 2019

The first meeting of the Veterinary Practice Advisory Panel and College Council was held in March 2019. Discussion included professional trends and challenges, increasing veterinary involvement in public consultations, and how Council can best utilize the panel.
