Prescribed Offences
Status: Regulatory concept received general consensus at the Transition Council at the September 23 & 24, 2024 meeting. Prior to public consultation, the Transition Council will review all the proposed concepts again.
Overview
The Veterinary Professionals Act requires applicants and licensed members to share information on offences and/or charges, as is currently required under the Veterinarians Act. The new legislation strengthens provisions around self-reporting. To fulfill a mandate for public protection, regulatory colleges need detailed information about licensed members to evaluate their ability to safely provide veterinary services to the public.
The Veterinary Professionals Act moves the requirement for self-reporting from by-laws to a statutory expectation and indicates the information that should be shared in the report. Offences and/or charges will continue to be processed through the investigations and hearings process. However, the Veterinary Professionals Act permits the College to seek interim orders, including suspensions, if the member’s conduct presents a risk to the public.
The draft concept receiving general consensus at the Transition Council outlines offences relevant to the practice of veterinary medicine and offences relevant to professionalism.
