The College protects your right to safe, competent and ethical veterinary care. When you require the services of a veterinarian, you can expect to receive safe, quality care from a highly-trained licensed professional.

Quality Practice Program

We believe you have the right to access safe and quality veterinary medicine in Ontario. The College’s Quality Practice program supports those efforts. Ontario veterinarians are highly competent, professional practitioners who care about positive outcomes for their animal patients as well as contributing to a healthy society. Veterinarians are committed to ongoing learning and understand the importance of maintaining high standards in the practice of veterinary medicine. 

Veterinarians demonstrate their continued competence and their commitment to quality and safety by meeting expected standards. The College is a partner in supporting lifelong learning among the profession. The goal is for veterinarians to maintain and improve their knowledge and skills throughout their careers. Further, veterinary facilities are regularly inspected and accredited.

The Quality Practice Program consists of three component parts:

  • Quality Assurance
  • Quality Improvement
  • Facility Accreditation

Quality Assurance Program

We believe the public has the right to access safe and quality veterinary medicine in Ontario. The College’s Quality Practice program is available to assist you in achieving that objective. Ontario veterinarians, like yourself, are highly competent, professional practitioners who care about positive outcomes for patients and contribute to a healthy society. It is through your commitment to ongoing learning that you support high standards in the practice of veterinary medicine in Ontario.

As a veterinarian, you demonstrate your continued competence and your commitment to quality and safety by meeting expected standards . The College partners with you through the Quality Practice Program which supports lifelong learning among the profession. The goal is for you to maintain and improve your knowledge and skills throughout your career.

Through the Quality Assurance Program, the public is assured that veterinarians are competent and they consistently engage in ongoing learning . Demonstrating ongoing learning assures the public that veterinarians have the education and professionalism to practise safely and competently in the ever-evolving field of veterinary medicine.

The Quality Assurance Program includes the following programs:

  • Peer Advisory Conversation
  • Peer Review of Medical Records

Quality Improvement Program

We support veterinarians in their continuing professional development activities. Through the Quality Improvement Program, the public is assured that licensed veterinarians have access to tools and resources that support their competence and professionalism. Through the program, we provide tools, resources, and learning opportunities that support veterinarians in their ongoing learning. 

The Quality Improvement Program includes the following tools and resources:

Facility Accreditation

Veterinarians are committed to providing a safe environment for animal care. The College supports quality and safety in the delivery of veterinary medicine through Facility Accreditation.

The profession, through Facility Accreditation, ensures access to quality veterinary care in a safe and professional environment through regular inspections of veterinary facilities conducted by trained inspectors.  

The accreditation process supports public confidence in the veterinary facility and enhances the quality of veterinary care by requiring that veterinarians review their facilities regularly to ensure they continually meet standards for quality and safety.
